In the 16th century, Don Aguirre leads Spanish conquistadors to South America in search of the Tear of the Moon; The flower of this plant can cure any disease, heal any injury and lift any curse. After most of the people die in the forest, the survivors are nursed back to health by a local tribe using tree leaves.
When the village chief refused to reveal the location of the tree, Aguirre stabbed him and the men attacked the villagers and destroyed their village. As punishment, the conquerors were cursed by the dead chief so that they could never leave sight of the river or the forest would return to him forever.
